A Ray of Hope

By Yu Ishii

In 2007 on May 7th, Dlick, Alice, Fiamailer, is sharing a party table and facial each other. Dlick starts talking. "Hey, guys. I'm just really excited because who could ever have predicted this situation? I still can't believe that we are actually sitting down and sharing a round table!"
Alice said, "Yeah. Me too, but this is really pleasant, isn't it?"
Today, they have been invited to the campaign of World AIDS Orphan Children Day which was held by Mr. Kuniyama who is a president of NGO as experienced speakers. The campaign has just finished and they have been invited to the get-together party.
They used to work as stay at an NGO in charge of the education of AIDS and flying round the world to support people who were suffering from AIDS. Presently, everyone has already got married and come back to their country. However, they keep supporting their local people as enjoy their lives with their families.
Thus, they also used to been staying in an establishment each other when they were taken away from their each home town as an orphan children. Therefore, all of them have huge unforgettable pasts when they were quite young age.

In 1981 in Uganda, today must become the biggest and hardest day for Dlick whom he will never able to forget in his life. Dlick is now 10 years old and his parents already died of AIDS when he was just 6 years old, so he was grown by their uncle and aunt since that time.
His aunt shouted at him, "Dlick, don't stop your hand just keep going otherwise you can't get a meal tonight."
"Yes, Mom. I will do it!"
Actually, he really wanted to go to a village school for studying, but he just had to work to help them and earn some money to live. He is realizing that he can stay there thanks of them, so he just works hard without any complaints.
However, today, when he was coming to work as usual, he couldn't find them anywhere.
"Good morning, Carol, Edie!!" he shouted about his uncle and aunt.
However, nobody answered his call and he couldn't understand what was happening. He felt strange it and asked people.
"Excuse me. Do you know where my uncle and aunt are? I haven't seen them since early morning."
The people said, "They suddenly disappeared last night and went somewhere. I have no idea about it, but they have definitely gone and are not coming back anymore."
"What?"
He couldn't understand the meaning immediately, but at least he understood that he lost his entire relative and became alone. He embarrassed to face on this situation, but he had to leave his house right away because he was staying his present home without paying, so he wouldn't be allowed to stay there anymore. In the afternoon, the house owner came and kicked him out. He was just grabbing a little small change. He suffered from lonely and anxious and also had absolutely no idea how to stay. Fortunately, he was given a quite small empty hut and a bit of money by some kind people.
However, he was unchanged his situation which he had to everything alone, so he was fighting loneliness after his uncle and aunt has gone. He was always going to bed early before the sky was getting too dark, because he didn't want to spend a dark night alone. When he woke up early, he was waiting till the sun was coming up and getting brightly outside. He was putting up with his present life and carrying on his bit job. One day, he injured his leg when he was working as usual, but he didn't know how to aim his leg and has anything for it. Therefore he just picked up a cotton swab from the ground and added some of salts to his leg. Actually he didn't know how he should do about it. He had no money to go to hospital and just had to carry on his work otherwise he couldn't earn money for his life and had to leave his small hut as well.
He just said silently himself, "I have to do everything by myself for living from now on, so I have to be a tough, just be a tough."
He couldn't become to believe anybody anymore after he lost his trust with adults. He just had to trust himself. Anyway, his poor and lonely life made him could barely make ends meet.
After 3 weeks, he was ran out of his whole money and became like a skin and bone. He was quite at a loss and out of his block. He was preparing for death with his whole sadness. That's when someone held out the hand to him.
The guy said to him, "Are you alright, boy?"
"Don't you have your home to back, do you?"
His name was Mr. Kuniyam. He was coming to Uganda to help orphan children as a NGO staff. He had seen their lots of miseries since he visited to there and also he learned that the orphan children who lost their parents because of AIDS have to fight with loneliness and discrimination. In these reasons, he picked him up and took to an orphan children care centre of Africa where he belonged to. This meeting between both made Dlick get a glimmer of hope for his future.

In 1983, Mr. Kuniyama was visiting to a small town of Kenya, Ukawara village. Here is located in 10 hours drive away from Nairobi. He met such a composition family. In there, 88 years-old woman and 6 orphan children were living together. He talked to one of them. Her name was Alice. She was still just 13 years old.
He asked her, "Who is working in here?
She replied soon, "No one."
He was wandering it and decided to ask her one more question.
"How are you living here?"
Then, the old grand mother said, "We are just given minimal money from our relative."
She was already 88 years old, that's why nobody could work in her family. In addition, their daily meal was actually just once or twice a day and also they just could eat nutrient-poor foods. In the result, He noticed that these children were quite small for their age.
He asked to Alice again, "Do you know where your daddy and mom are?"
Alice said, "Daddy? Mom?" "I don't know where they are, because I have never seen them."
Actually her parents had already died because of suffering from AIDS when Alice was quite young, so she didn't have her memorize of parents in her mind. Therefore she was also suspected of AIDS inflection, but she didn't check it so far. It will take 2 hours walk from her house to a hospital, so it is too far way for children and her grandmother.
Mr. Kuniyama asked her again.
"What do you want to do if you can do whatever you want?"
She said, "Look at this."
She showed him her knee and He lost a word. It was a blotch which was actually quite big.
She continued to say. "It hurts me when I walk."
He heard that she got it when she was young and then it was getting big with her growth. Recently the pain was getting worse and she was limping of her leg when she walked. He could find another blotch on her arm as well. Indeed, nobody knows what her blotches are and also if these blotches are benign or malignancy. They just know that she has to go to hospital as soon as possible to check them. However she has never been to there since she was childhood. There is no way to go there for them in this situation. When her parents still alive, there is a little money to spend for her illness and could go to the hospital, but after she lost her parents, she couldn't go there anymore and her blotches were just getting big and hard. She strongly said to him. "I really want to go to hospital and see a doctor to be cared." "Could you help me?"
He couldn't reply any good answers and he just nagged. He couldn't find a word after he faced on the actual condition of AIDS in Africa.
He told to himself, "What can I do for her?" "How can I make her happiness even just a little?"
He could deeply understand her sadness. Actually her situation clashed with Dlick who was one of orphan children in Uganda where he visited 2 years ago. That's why he decided to take her to the orphan child care centre to grow her up and give her small happiness.

In the orphan child care centre, the staff is picking orphan children up from all over the Africa. Especially they take these people who were living very difficult and bad situations which are like the child who doesn't have any relative and lives alone. They can learn about the basic of child social and educational things in there and live together with other children and also learn about community life. In future, the centre gives them a chance to get a job and set them on their feet. These are project of this centre and Mr. Kuniyama who is one of there staff and he is walking around Africa to investigate the AIDS situation and give him hand for these orphan children. Dlick and Alice could join the project thanks of him and they were living together and made lots of friends in there.

In 1993, One day, Mr. Kuniyama took a girl to the centre, but she was separate to live with other children in there. She was a special compare to other children, because she was suffering AIDS herself. In this year, Mr. Kuniyama was visiting to a small hospital in South Africa and met her. Her name is Fiamailer, She came the hospital when she was 2 years old. Her mother had died in this yeah because of suffering AIDS. That's why she got AIDS by mother infection. She had already been in the hospital, but she was left untreated. The hospital didn't have enough cures, so the cures were using for heavier illness people. She looked fine but it means that she just had not appeared her AIDS symptom. She was just waiting to be cared someday.
Mr. Kuniyama asked her, "Do you have any treasure which you really like?"
"Of course I have. This is my Mom."
She showed him her mother's photo.
"I really love Mom!"
He heard that she had already known her mother had died and was not coming back anymore. However she said to him that she loves her even now. He felt so poor about her mind and also was impressed that she was fighting to her AIDS with her mother. He thought that he didn't want her to just stay in the hospital and getting run-down. He wanted to give her an opportunity to care her AIDS and to live outside with people. In these reasons, he decided to take her to the orphan child care centre.

After he sent her to the orphan child care centre, he remained in South Africa and kept researching the situation of AIDS until end of this year. Through this 10 years, he was walking around Africa and seeing the miseries AIDS cause. It was huge things than he was thinking before coming to there. He was feeing ineffectuality with huge issues concurrently with worthwhile with his job. After the end of this year, he moved his position to the orphan child care centre. From 1994, he started working in the centre to care of children and grow up them. In the centre, there are around 100 orphan children who were picked up by NGO staff. He met Dlick, Alice and Fiamailer again for the first time in a decade.
Dlick said, "Long time no see, Mr. Kuniyama. How's it going?"
Alice also said, "I'm glad to see you again, Mr. Kuniyama"
They have already grown up very well last 10 years while he hasn't seen them. He was really happy to see them. However he just worried about Fiamailer, because she was suffering AIDS unlike Dlick and Alice.
"How's your feeling, Fiamailer?"
"I'm fine." "I don't feel hurt these days thanks of the great medical care." "I might get over AIDS!" "Thanks, Mr. Kuniyama."
Actually, the centre was providing latest medical systems, so it was quite helpful her. He was just pleased that the children whom he took from Africa were growing up and feel fine. He thought he wants to make them grow up to good adults and give them some carrier opportunities outside of the centre.

10 years later, Dlick, Alice and Fiamailer were given careers as part of the NGO staff. Three of them worked for NGO and flew around the world to send AIDS issues as experienced speakers about AIDS. It was not only great work for them but also they could give world people the respect of AIDS. Now, three of them are coming to JAPAN, meeting again, and then give us the time to think about AIDS.
